Egypt Moving Forward: New Cabinet Welcomes Record Number of Female Ministers

Egypt reached a new high-water mark this week for women in government as President Abdel Fattah el Sisi witnessed the swearing in of a new cabinet featuring a record number of female ministers. Yasmine Fouad and Hala Zayed were sworn in as Ministers for Health and Environment, bringing the total number of women in Egypt’s Cabinet to eight, or one quarter of the entire body, and the highest share in its history.

NEW CABINET WITH RECORD NUMBER OF WOMEN MINISTERS SWORN IN BEFORE PRESIDENT EL SISI
On Thursday, 14 June, a new cabinet formed by recently appointed Prime Minister Dr. Moustafa Madbouly was announced and sworn into office before President El Sisi.  According to Ahram Online, the new cabinet is comprised of 32 ministers, including twelve new appointments and two new female ministers. Eight women now serve in Egypt’s Cabinet, representing 25% of the body. The existing ministers of Foreign Affairs, Justice, Supply, Planning, Petroleum and Mineral Wealth, Investment and International Cooperation, and Tourism will continue to serve in the new cabinet, while new appointments will lead the ministries of Agriculture, Defense, Interior, Information and Communications Technology, Civil Aviation, Environment, Local Development and Public Enterprise. 15 new deputy ministers were also appointed, including Finance, Electricity and Housing.

EGYPT TO PROMOTE ‘EXPERIENCE & INVEST’ CAMPAIGN AS OFFICIAL REGIONAL SUPPORTER OF 2018 FIFA WORLD CUP
On Tuesday, 12 June, the Ministry of Investment and International Cooperation signed a contract with FIFA to become Africa’s sole Official Regional Supporter for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The agreement is designed to promote Egypt as a global investment and tourism destination. “Being an Official Regional Supporter of the World Cup gives us the outreach in Africa to highlight and communicate the premium positioning and enormous investment diversity and potential Egypt has to offer,” Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Sahar Nasr said.  According to Egypt Independent, Tourism Minister Rania el Mashat said that the ‘Experience & Invest’ campaign is determined to use this opportunity to showcase in a modern way the rich and rewarding diversity of tourism experiences that Egypt offers. EGYPT RANKS HIGH IN GALLUP’S 2018 GLOBAL LAW AND ORDER REPORT
This week, Egypt was named the 16th safest country in the world out of 135 countries ranked inGallup’s 2018 Global Law and Order Poll. The poll presents the results from Gallup’s latest measurements of people’s answers to questions based on more than 148,000 interviews with adults in 142 countries and areas in 2017. With a score of 88 out of 100, Egypt ranked ahead of the U.K., the U.S., and France, and was the only Arab or African nation Gallup included in its ‘Countries/Areas with Highest Law and Order Index Scores’ category. The index uses four questions in its survey, which address areas including confidence in the local police force, safety walking alone in city of residence, and other measures of crime.

EGYPTIAN AMERICAN ENTERPRISE FUND INVESTS $130 MILLION IN EGYPT IN 2017
The Egyptian American Enterprise Fund (EAEF) reported this week that its investments in Egypt reached $130 million as of the end of 2017, according to the fund’s annual report.  According to Enterprise, highlights from 2017 include SPE Capital, formerly Swicorp Private Equity buying a stake in Orchidia Pharmaceutical Industries. The fund also expanded investments with local fund managers, including in midmarket fund manager TCV. The EAEF also committed USD $550,000 towards a $5.5 million investment in partnership with Egypt Ventures and the International Finance Corporation to seed regional startup accelerator Flat6Labs. “As Egypt’s macroeconomic environment has stabilized, the private sector’s role as a primary engine of growth has become more essential,” said Chairman James Harmon. “We are pleased with the progress of the EAEF and are cautiously optimistic about the future of the Egyptian economy,” he added.

EGYPT WELCOMES OUTCOMES OF U.S.–NORTH KOREA SUMMIT
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt welcomed the U.S.-North Korea summit held this week in Singapore, saying that it would contribute to ending the state of tension and bring forth peace and stability to the Korean Peninsula. According to the MFA statement, Egypt affirmed that the summit and its positive atmosphere will enhance the aspirations of the peoples of the Korean peninsula to achieve security, stability and development, and represent a fundamental and important step towards achieving the goal of nuclear disarmament worldwide. The statement further emphasized Egypt’s position on the need to combine international efforts to implement all terms of the Non-Proliferation Treaty to reach a world free of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction.
