President El Sisi Pardons 332 Prisoners

On Tuesday, 15 May, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi issued pardons for 332 jailed individuals in Egypt, including a large number of youth and individuals with health problems.

The pardons were issued on the recommendation of the Presidential Commission formed to review requests for clemency following Egypt’s first National Youth Conference. In the time since, President El Sisi has accepted the recommendations of the committee three times, issuing pardons in November 2016 and February 2017.

President El Sisi has now issued 616 pardons for prisoners, the majority of whom are youths. President El Sisi highlighted the pardons in his remarks to the fifth National Youth Conference on Tuesday, 15 May.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has issued a presidential decree pardoning 332 jailed individuals including youths and those with health problems.

Those pardoned include Andrew Nassef, a member of the leftist under-construction Bread and Freedom Party, who was serving a five-year sentence for propagating for the committing of terror acts.
Islam Marei, a leading member of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party (ESDP), who was serving a three-year sentence on financing terrorism charges, is among those pardoned, a source in the ESDP  told Ahram Online.

Under the Egyptian constitution, the president can issue pardon decrees for prisoners who have been handed final court rulings that cannot be appealed.
